An application for the RS School education process
This is the actual app RS School runs its bootcamps on — course management, mentor/student assignment, interview scheduling, and grading for thousands of students across front-end, back-end, mobile, and data science tracks. Worth looking at if you want a real production monorepo (Next.js + NestJS + Postgres) rather than a toy CRUD example.
It's running at real scale (10k+ students) so the patterns for cohort/mentor assignment and grading aren't hypothetical — they've survived actual usage. The repo also shows a live migration in progress: Koa.js is marked deprecated and NestJS is the replacement, which is a useful reference if you're doing the same thing incrementally instead of a big-bang rewrite. CI/CD, Playwright e2e, Sentry, Checkly, and a public status page are all wired up and visible, so you get the full ops picture, not just app code. It also ships `.agents/skills` with NestJS convention docs meant for AI coding agents, which is a decent template if you want to codify backend rules for Claude or Copilot on your own project.
Having two backends (Koa.js and NestJS) live side by side means anyone reading the server code has to figure out which parts are legacy and which are current — there's duplicated logic until the migration finishes. Local setup is Podman-specific rather than plain Docker, plus you need to restore a DB snapshot before anything runs, so onboarding takes longer than a typical docker-compose README. The domain model (cohorts, stages, mentors, interviews) isn't explained anywhere in the README, so a first-time contributor has to reverse-engineer the business logic before a PR is useful. 'hacktoberfest' is the only topic tag on a repo this size, which makes it nearly invisible to anyone searching GitHub by subject.
