Simple shell script for initiating blue-green deployments on Amazon EC2 Container Service (ECS)
A single bash script that drives ECS blue-green-style deployments by registering a new task definition revision with an updated image tag and updating the service to use it. It's aimed at teams who want to deploy to ECS from CI without pulling in Terraform, CDK, or a full deployment platform.
Zero runtime dependencies beyond aws-cli and jq, so it drops into any CI image without a language toolchain. Has real edge-case handling earned from production use: --enable-rollback, --max-definitions to prune old revisions, --copy-task-definition-tags, and a --skip-deployments-check escape hatch for services with slow draining. Ships a GitHub Actions action.yml and a bats test suite, not just a README example.
It's explicitly in maintenance mode now — feature-complete, bugfixes and AWS CLI compat only, so don't expect new ECS capabilities without submitting the PR yourself. The core image-tag substitution runs through shell eval on a user-supplied string, which the README treats as a feature (git describe, reading a VERSION file) but is a real injection risk if that input isn't fully trusted. It's not actually ECS CodeDeploy blue-green — it's a rolling update via task-definition swap, which matters if you need true traffic-shifting or automated canary rollback rather than just the old tasks staying up until new ones are healthy. All logic lives in one shell script, so anything beyond the already-tested parsing bits is hard to unit test or extend cleanly.
