// the take
Solid is a reactive UI library that compiles JSX to real DOM operations with fine-grained signal-based updates instead of a virtual DOM diff. It's for frontend devs who want React-like ergonomics but without re-render overhead, and who don't mind a smaller ecosystem than React or Vue.
No VDOM diffing - the compiler generates direct DOM update code, which is why it tops the js-framework-benchmark charts. Signals/createSignal/createMemo give you real automatic dependency tracking without a compiler doing magic guesswork (unlike React's useMemo deps arrays). Components run once instead of re-rendering, which eliminates a whole class of stale-closure and memoization bugs. SSR with streaming and progressive hydration is actually built into core, not bolted on.
The 'components run once' model is a genuine mental shift from React and trips people up constantly, especially around destructuring props (breaks reactivity) and conditionals. Ecosystem is thin compared to React - fewer component libraries, fewer Stack Overflow answers, fewer devs who already know the patterns. Store/mutable API (packages/solid/store) adds another layer of conceptual overhead on top of signals that beginners need to learn separately. TypeScript JSX typing requires specific tsconfig setup (jsxImportSource) that's an extra hoop compared to frameworks with more mainstream tooling support.
