Type less, code more: Cody is an AI code assistant that uses advanced search and codebase context to help you write and fix code.

Cody is Sourcegraph's AI coding assistant for VS Code and JetBrains, built around codebase-wide context retrieval rather than just autocomplete. This specific repo is a frozen public snapshot taken right before Sourcegraph made the real `cody` repo private, so it's a historical artifact, not a live project — useful to read, not to contribute to or track.

It's a real shipped codebase (marketplace extensions with actual users), not a toy, and the agent core is split from editor-specific bindings (VS Code, JetBrains/Kotlin) via a defined protocol, so the context-retrieval and LLM-calling logic isn't tangled with UI code. It also supports multiple swappable LLM backends (Claude, GPT-4o, Mixtral, Gemini) as an actual architectural choice, backed by real CI (e2e flakiness detection, integration stability checks) that shows this ran at scale.

The repo is explicitly dead on arrival: the README says outright that the live project moved private and this is just a snapshot, so there's no path to get a PR merged or an issue looked at here. Despite the Apache license, individual use still requires a Sourcegraph.com account to avoid LLM abuse, so you can't actually self-host this independent of their backend. The tree is also heavily padded with auto-generated protocol bindings (hundreds of generated Kotlin files) that bury the actual logic, and the useful enterprise features (audit logs, bring-your-own-model, single-tenant) are gated behind a paid tier anyway.
