Official repository for Spyder - The Scientific Python Development Environment

Spyder is a desktop IDE for scientific Python, built on PyQt5, that puts an editor, IPython consoles, a variable explorer, a debugger and a profiler in one window. It is aimed at analysts and scientists who want to inspect live session state, and its console and other widgets can also be embedded in a PyQt5 application.

- The variable explorer is the main reason to pick it over a general-purpose editor. NumPy arrays, pandas DataFrames and PIL images can be inspected and edited from the live session without adding print calls, which most editors do not do out of the box.

- Platform coverage is good for a GUI app. GitHub Actions runs the suite on Windows, macOS and Linux, a separate Qt6 workflow exists, and coverage is reported to both Codecov and Coveralls.

- Language features like completion and linting go through the Language Server Protocol, and python-lsp-server is pulled in as a git subrepo under external-deps. That keeps the analysis layer in a separate process you can read, debug or swap without touching the editor.

- Support is effectively Anaconda-only. The README says people who install with pip, apt, MacPorts or WinPython get no individual help and are pointed to Anaconda. Qt and PyQt5 binary setup is a common source of breakage, so this is a real limit for anyone outside that ecosystem.

- The version guidance contradicts itself. The build section says Python 3.8 or newer, the runtime section says 3.11+, and the dependencies still name PyQt5 5.15+ even though a Qt6 workflow and a 6.x branch exist. Anyone adopting it has to work out which Python and Qt combination is actually tested.

- The README names one maintainer plus a volunteer community, and funding comes from donations through Open Collective, NumFOCUS and Quansight. That is a thin base for a codebase this size, so check recent release cadence and issue response times before depending on it for anything you need fixed on a schedule.
