SteVe - OCPP server implementation in Java. Your trusted open-source EV charging station management system since 2013. Used by CPOs, manufacturers and developers worldwide. Managed cloud →
SteVe is a Java-based OCPP central system (CSMS) for EV charge point management, running continuously since 2013 out of RWTH Aachen. It's for operators and developers who need a self-hosted backend to register charge points, manage RFID auth, run remote operations, and track transactions — not a library, a full admin app with a web UI and REST API.
Genuinely broad protocol coverage: OCPP 1.2, 1.5 and 1.6 over both SOAP and WebSocket/JSON in one codebase, which is unusual since most open implementations only bother with 1.6J. It ships as a single runnable WAR with an embedded server, so there's no Tomcat setup, and the admin UI covers the real operational surface (charge points, OCPP tags, charging profiles, reservations, transactions, security events, installed certificates) rather than just exposing raw protocol calls. Deployment is actually thought through: Docker Compose, Kubernetes manifests, and an OpenAPI-documented REST API for scripting against it.
No OCPP 2.0.1 support — it's capped at 1.6, and that's the version the OCA and newer charge points are moving past, so this isn't a fit for a greenfield deployment targeting current hardware. Building it now requires JDK 25, which is a lot to ask of anyone running a normal production Java stack just to compile a self-hosted app. It's MySQL/MariaDB only, no Postgres option. And there's now a commercial spinoff (Powerfill) built directly on SteVe's OCPP implementation — worth watching whether community features keep getting attention once the certified paid product is the thing generating announcements.
