// the take

A small Next.js 13 App Router template that wraps a weather API behind the (now-dead) ChatGPT Plugin spec, serving the plugin manifest, an edge route for weather data, and a dynamic OG image per location. It's for someone who wants a minimal reference for App Router edge features, not for anyone actually building a ChatGPT plugin today.

Clean example of Next.js 13 edge features: the ai-plugin.json + openapi.json manifest pattern, an edge route handler returning JSON, and the ImageResponse API generating per-location OG images at the edge. Codebase is tiny and readable end to end in a few minutes. One-click Vercel deploy with the single required env var (WEATHER_API_KEY) documented in the README.

ChatGPT Plugins were deprecated by OpenAI in 2024, so the entire premise — install this as a plugin — no longer works; it's only useful now as a generic 'Next.js App Router + edge functions' starter, which isn't how it's marketed. No tests at all. Last commit is May 2023, so some App Router APIs (metadata, ImageResponse) have since changed in ways this hasn't kept up with. Deploy instructions require manually find-and-replacing a hardcoded domain string across the codebase instead of using an env var, which is the kind of thing people forget and ship broken.
