Rust bindings to https://github.com/ggerganov/whisper.cpp
Rust bindings for whisper.cpp, the C/C++ port of OpenAI's Whisper speech recognition model, with a small safe wrapper over the common transcription path and the raw bindings available behind a feature flag. The project has moved to Codeberg and receives no further updates here, so it suits developers who want a public-domain Whisper binding and are willing to follow the project there.
The safe API is small: WhisperContext::new_with_params, FullParams and state.full cover the transcription path in about twenty lines, and the examples run end to end. GPU backends are feature flags (cuda, metal, vulkan, hipblas, openblas) that map onto whisper.cpp's own build options, so acceleration doesn't need hand-edited build scripts. The raw-api flag exposes whisper-rs-sys for calls the wrapper doesn't cover, which is a cleaner escape hatch than forking. The Unlicense means no attribution or license-compatibility questions for commercial or embedded use.
The repo is frozen. Development moved to Codeberg and the last push here was 2025-07-30, so issues and PRs opened on GitHub won't be read, and the whisper.cpp submodule pin will drift behind upstream. Building needs a recursive clone because whisper.cpp is a submodule, and bindgen runs at build time; the README admits it can panic, and the WHISPER_DONT_GENERATE_BINDINGS workaround copies bindings that may be stale. Only Windows, macOS and Linux are documented, and the author says other platforms are untested. The raw-api feature has no semver guarantee, since whisper-rs-sys can take breaking changes in a patch release, so anyone depending on it should pin exact versions.
