// the take

A macOS menu bar utility that lets you rank your audio output devices by priority and automatically switches to whichever ranked device is currently connected — useful for anyone who bounces between laptop speakers, wired headphones, and Bluetooth devices and is tired of macOS picking the wrong one. Built with SwiftUI and CoreAudio, aimed at users comfortable building from source or grabbing a GitHub release rather than the Mac App Store crowd.

Talks to CoreAudio directly instead of shelling out to a CLI tool like SwitchAudioSource, so device switching is immediate and doesn't depend on polling. Keying priorities off device UID rather than name means the ranking survives reconnects across different USB ports or Bluetooth re-pairs. Splitting speakers and headphones into separate priority lists is a genuinely useful distinction most "default audio device" switchers skip, and the device-memory/edit-mode feature for ranking devices that are currently unplugged is a nice touch most competitors lack.

The README's own description promises microphone priority management, but the codebase only has an OutputCategory split (speaker/headphone) — there's no input-device model or logic at all, so mic switching isn't actually implemented despite being advertised. Priorities live in UserDefaults with no iCloud sync or export/import, so a new machine means rebuilding your ranking from scratch. No test suite and the only CI is a release build workflow, so regressions in CoreAudio device-change handling (a notoriously flaky API around rapid connect/disconnect events) would have to be caught by users. Distribution is build-from-source or an unsigned/unnotarized-looking GitHub release, which means Gatekeeper friction and no auto-update path for non-technical users.
