topaz/paste

★ 575 · JavaScript · MIT · updated Dec 2023

A no-datastore, client-side paste service.

A single-page pastebin that encodes the entire paste into the URL itself using LZMA compression and Base64 — there's no server, no database, and nothing to go down or get purged. It's for anyone who wants to share a quick snippet without trusting (or running) a backend.

Zero infrastructure: it's a static HTML file plus two JS files, deployable on GitHub Pages with no build step or server cost. LZMA gives noticeably better compression than plain Base64, so even verbose text produces a manageable URL. The data-permanence story is real — as long as the URL exists, the paste exists, independent of any company staying in business.

The core design has a hard ceiling: browsers and many apps (Slack, email clients, URL shorteners) truncate or choke on very long URLs, so anything beyond a small snippet risks silent corruption when shared through a channel that mangles long links. There's no edit history, versioning, or way to update a paste — each change is a brand new URL with no relation to the old one. Last pushed in December 2023 with no CI or tests in the tree, so it's effectively a finished side project rather than something actively maintained. No syntax highlighting or language-aware rendering, which most users expect from a pastebin in 2026.
