unconed/TermKit
Experimental Terminal platform built on WebKit + node.js. Currently only for Mac and Windows, though the prototype works 90% in any WebKit browser.
TermKit is a 2011 experiment in rebuilding the terminal on WebKit and Node.js, splitting the UI (rich, typed output instead of a text stream) from command execution on the back end. It's for people curious about terminal UX history, not for anyone looking for a daily driver.
The core idea — treating command output as MIME-typed data that gets rendered richly (tables, images, etc.) instead of raw text — was genuinely ahead of its time and clearly influenced later terminal rewrites like Hyper. Token-based input with inline autocomplete and automatic escaping is a real usability win most shells and terminals still don't bother with. The front/back-end separation (WebKit view, Node.js execution) is a clean architectural idea even by today's standards.
The README says outright 'Nothing works yet' and the last commit is from December 2011 — this is a dead alpha, not usable software. Setup depends on an ancient Node.js/npm toolchain, git submodules, and Xcode, none of which will work cleanly on a modern machine without real archaeology. There's no test suite, no CI, and no packaging beyond a zipped Xcode build and a Node daemon you start by hand. It explicitly isn't a full terminal emulator (can't host vim) or a shell replacement, so even working, it solved a narrower problem than 'replace your terminal.'
