// the take
Bruno is a file-system-based, git-friendly alternative to Postman/Insomnia for building and testing HTTP/GraphQL requests, aimed at developers who want to version-control API collections as plain text instead of syncing them to someone else's cloud.
The Bru markup format stores requests as readable plain text files, so diffs in git actually mean something instead of giving you an opaque JSON blob. It ships a real CLI (@usebruno/cli) with Docker images for CI pipelines, not just a GUI afterthought. The repo has a genuinely large, active contributor base with a serious CI matrix across Windows/Mac/Linux and structured testing/docs for contributors (even Claude-specific review skills and architecture rule files, which is a sign of a codebase trying to keep consistency at scale).
No cloud sync is a stated permanent design choice, which is good for privacy but means teams wanting hosted sharing have to go to the paid tiers — read the fine print before assuming 'open source' covers your workflow. The Electron/React app is a large, sprawling codebase (hundreds of component directories) that could be intimidating to contribute to despite the rules docs. Feature parity across platforms and the GraphQL/OpenAPI import tooling has historically lagged behind Postman's, so migrating complex existing collections isn't always painless.
