Intro to Functional Programming Workshop

// the take

A one-day workshop (slides + exercises) teaching functional programming fundamentals in JavaScript: pure functions, recursion, higher-order functions, closures, composition, and immutability. It's aimed at JS developers who've heard the FP buzz and want a hands-on, no-Haskell-required intro, not at people already comfortable with the paradigm.

Each topic has its own folder with a runnable exercise file plus a matching `.test.js`, so you get immediate pass/fail feedback instead of just reading prose. The progression (pure functions → recursion → HOFs → closures → composition → immutability) is a sensible build-up rather than a grab-bag of topics. The reference list at the end is unusually good and specific — talks and articles from people like Alan Kay, David Nolen, and Scott Sauyet, not generic blog spam.

No commits since April 2023 and no issues/PR activity visible, so compatibility questions (it recommends Node 6 or 8) won't get answered. It's built around a live facilitator walking through slides and a printed schedule — doing it solo from the README alone loses a lot of the intended structure. There's no hosted/interactive version (e.g. CodeSandbox), so you still need a local Node setup just to run a teaching exercise. As a workshop rather than a library, there's nothing here to actually adopt into a codebase.

We read the README, the directory tree and a key source file in October 2026. Nobody pays to be listed. How we judge →
