A library for reading, writing and analysis of magnetic stripe information.
libmsr is a C library for talking to magnetic stripe reader/writers, mainly the MSR-206 and firmware-compatible units. It is a fork of an inactive project and is aimed at developers building card-handling tools on that hardware, not at anyone who only needs to parse track data in software.
- The file layout separates the public API (libmsr.c and libmsr.h) from the device driver (msr206.c) and the serial I/O layer (serialio.c), so the hardware-specific code is at least isolated from the interface.
- Doxygen docs are generated from the source and deployed by a separate CI workflow, which is more than most small hardware-facing C libraries bother with.
- The build is a single Makefile with a make install target and no external dependencies visible in the tree, so the whole library is short enough to read end to end before adopting it.
- Hardware testing covers one device. The author says they have only tested with the MSR-505C, and support for the MSR-206 and MSR-605 is inferred from firmware compatibility rather than verified.
- The last push was April 2020. The README does not say whether the fork is still maintained, so anyone adopting it takes on six years of toolchain and platform drift with no upstream fixes in sight.
- The README says the original library had buggy components but does not say which were fixed or how. No test directory appears in the visible part of the tree, so there is little evidence of regression coverage for the serial path.
- With 16 stars and one maintainer, the serial layer has had little outside review, and it is the part most likely to need changes on other operating systems or USB-serial adapters.
