// the take

rav1e is an AV1 video encoder written in Rust, built as a safer, more maintainable alternative to libaom for cases where libaom's reference encoder is too slow. It's a CLI tool plus library/C-API, backed by Xiph/Mozilla, and targets both batch encoding and embedding into other media pipelines via cargo-c.

Memory safety matters a lot for codecs since they parse and transform compressed data at the SIMD level where C/C++ encoders have historically had plenty of buffer-overflow CVEs - doing this in Rust while still hand-writing AVX2/AVX512/NEON assembly for the hot paths is a legitimately hard balance to strike. The cargo-c based C-API build means it slots into existing C/C++ toolchains (e.g. ffmpeg) without requiring callers to touch Rust. 11 speed settings plus both constant-quantizer and single/multi-pass bitrate modes cover a wide range of real encoding workflows, not just a demo mode. CI pins exact NASM versions and tests across ubuntu/fedora/macOS/windows, so the build matrix is taken seriously rather than 'works on my machine.'

Input is y4m-only and monochrome isn't supported, so anyone with mp4/mkv sources needs ffmpeg in front of this just to get started - that's friction for a first run. The channel-api and other unstable features are explicitly 'bound to change,' so don't build production code against them. Build dependencies are fragmented across platforms (NASM for x86, gas or clang for aarch64, separate cargo-c install for the C-API), which makes CI setup more annoying than a single toolchain story. The project's own 'fastest' claim is specifically relative to libaom, not to hardware encoders or other software encoders like SVT-AV1, so don't take the README title at face value when picking an encoder for a real pipeline.
