SmartTube is a free, open-source YouTube client built for Android TV boxes and sticks, letting people watch without ads, without a Google account, and with SponsorBlock baked in. It's for Android TV owners comfortable sideloading apps outside the Play Store — not a general-purpose YouTube alternative and explicitly unsupported on phones or tablets.
SponsorBlock is a first-class feature with per-category skip settings, not a bolted-on extra. It runs without any Google Play Services dependency, so it works on bare-bones TV boxes that lack GMS entirely. Device coverage is unusually wide, from Android 4.3 TVs up through NVIDIA Shield, Chromecast with Google TV, and Fire TV sticks released before Amazon's October 2025 VegaOS switch. The README currently opens with a disclosure that the maintainer's dev machine was infected with malware, meaning some past builds and signing keys may have been compromised — a real supply-chain scare for anyone installing an APK from this project right now. The whole thing depends on reverse-engineering YouTube's unofficial internals, so it's one server-side change away from breaking (the FAQ already lists several YouTube-side regressions it can't control). Distribution is sideload-only with no auto-update beyond an in-app checker, and the build requires OpenJDK 14 or older, a dated and easy-to-get-wrong toolchain constraint.
