ZFile is a self-hosted Spring Boot app that puts one web UI in front of many storage backends at once — S3, OneDrive, SharePoint, Google Drive, local disk, FTP/SFTP, plus a couple of Chinese cloud providers — with previews, direct/short links, and per-user directory permissions. It's for someone who already has files scattered across several drives or buckets and wants a single browsable, shareable frontend instead of juggling native clients for each.
The storage abstraction is genuinely broad and useful, not just an S3-with-a-UI wrapper — mixing local disk, SFTP, and multiple cloud providers under one file tree is the actual value proposition. Preview support goes further than most self-hosted file browsers, including OnlyOffice integration for Office docs and even 3D OBJ preview. The codebase is organized into real modules (link, password, log, config, onlyoffice) with separated controllers/services/mappers rather than one sprawling package, and it ships with a one-line install script plus multi-arch Docker images.
There's no visible test directory in the tree — for a project juggling this many external storage integrations, the lack of unit or integration tests means backend-specific regressions likely surface as user bug reports rather than CI failures. Some features (download rate limiting, file-type restrictions per user) are gated behind a paid 'donation version,' and the README notes this code was merged and is now being re-split out of the open repo, so it's worth checking which capabilities are actually present in a given release before relying on them. Auth/session handling is built on Sa-Token rather than Spring Security — workable, but a less-documented choice outside the Chinese Spring ecosystem, and worth a closer read of the security filter code before exposing an instance to the internet. Documentation is Chinese-only, which is a real barrier despite the backend list including plenty of Western cloud providers.
