A hosts-file generator that pins GitHub's various domains (api, raw, avatars, codeload, etc.) to specific IPs so users on networks with broken DNS/CDN routing to GitHub (mostly China) stop seeing dead images and slow clones. It's for anyone who needs a quick, no-install workaround rather than a VPN.
The approach is dead simple: no client software, just a hosts file block you paste in or point SwitchHosts/AdGuard at a remote URL. A GitHub Action resolves and republishes the IP list on a schedule and only updates when something actually changed, so the hosts endpoint isn't churning for no reason. Coverage is broad — it handles avatars, LFS/S3 asset buckets, codeload, and even the Copilot API host, not just github.com itself.
It's hardcoding IPs for domains behind a CDN that load-balances and rotates addresses, so entries go stale and need constant chasing — this is a cat-and-mouse game with whatever is blocking the straightforward route, not a fix. You're also trusting raw.hellogithub.com as a single point of failure for your DNS resolution of github.com; if that gets compromised or blocked, the workaround breaks or gets worse. The project itself says it's still in a testing stage, there's no test suite, and the funding note in the README (server renewal needed by end of 2026) means continuity isn't guaranteed.
