// the take

A mirror repo that republishes MaxMind's GeoLite2 GeoIP databases, auto-refreshed via a GitHub Actions cron job. It exists because MaxMind locked down direct downloads behind license keys in 2019, so this is for projects (like Dreamacro's own Clash) that want GeoIP data without making every user register for a MaxMind account.

The whole mechanism is a single GitHub Actions workflow that pulls and commits updated .mmdb files on a schedule — no server, no app code, nothing to deploy or operate. It solves a real, specific pain point: MaxMind's license-key requirement is friction that plenty of small tools don't want to push onto their own users.

Redistributing GeoLite2 data like this sits in a gray area against MaxMind's EULA, which restricts redistribution outside your own licensed account — anyone depending on this repo inherits that risk, and MaxMind could get it taken down at any time with zero notice. There's no changelog, versioning, or tagging of releases, so you can't pin a known-good snapshot or diff what changed between updates. It's a bus-factor-of-one dependency (one maintainer, one cron job) with no fallback if the upstream scraping breaks or the account gets flagged. No tests or validation step confirms the committed database isn't corrupted or stale before it lands in main.
