Stable Diffusion web UI

The web UI that made Stable Diffusion usable by non-programmers, and still the default reference point people compare newer front-ends against. It's for anyone doing local image generation who wants every sampler, extension, and workflow trick in one place rather than a clean tool built around one idea.

The extension ecosystem is the actual product now — LoRA, hypernetworks, ControlNet-adjacent tooling, and dozens of community scripts drop in without touching core code. It runs on genuinely constrained hardware (4GB VRAM, reports of 2GB) thanks to years of memory-optimization work borrowed and merged from a dozen other projects. Generation parameters get embedded directly in PNG/EXIF metadata, so an image is self-documenting — drag it back into the UI and get the exact settings that made it.

The codebase is a patchwork of vendored code from a dozen upstream research repos (GFPGAN, CodeFormer, k-diffusion, UniPC, etc.) stitched together rather than designed as one system — modules/ has 100+ flat files with no clear ownership boundaries. Python is pinned to 3.10.6 specifically because newer versions break the torch dependency chain, which is a real setup tax for anyone not already in that ecosystem. The API is present but clearly bolted onto a UI-first architecture, not built as a first-class interface. Momentum has visibly shifted to forks (Forge, reForge) and to ComfyUI for anything node-based or performance-sensitive, so new capability tends to land elsewhere first.
