// the take
Floating Vue (formerly v-tooltip) provides tooltip, popover, dropdown, and menu components/directives for Vue, built on top of floating-ui for positioning. It's aimed at Vue app developers who need reliable popover positioning without hand-rolling collision detection and placement logic themselves.
Built on floating-ui (the Popper.js successor), so placement, flipping, and viewport collision handling are offloaded to a library that's actually maintained and widely used elsewhere. Offers both a directive API (v-tooltip) for quick cases and full components (Tooltip, Dropdown, Menu) for more control, so you're not locked into one usage pattern. Has real e2e coverage via Playwright plus unit tests and a documented theme system using CSS variables, which is more test investment than most UI component libs this size bother with. SSR is explicitly tested (ssr.spec.ts), so it won't blow up under Nuxt.
The version history is genuinely confusing — v-tooltip v3/v4 became floating-vue v1/v5, split by Vue 2 vs Vue 3 targeting, so if you search for examples online you'll find snippets from three different naming eras. Vue 2 support is effectively legacy at this point since Vue 2 itself is past end-of-life, so new projects should assume they're on the v5/Vue 3 line only. It's a single-maintainer project (Akryum) funded through GitHub Sponsors, which is a real bus-factor risk for something you'd embed in production UI. As with most positioning libraries, accessibility (focus trapping, keyboard navigation within Menu/Dropdown) isn't something the README advertises — worth digging into before using this for anything beyond simple tooltips.
