// the take
A grab-bag of Android utility classes covering file I/O, encryption, permissions, networking, toasts, snackbars, status bar tweaks, and dozens of other common tasks. Aimed at Java/Kotlin Android developers who want to skip writing boilerplate helpers for things the platform makes needlessly verbose.
Enormous breadth — permissions, encode/encrypt, cache, event bus, reflection, screen adaptation are all covered with demo activities and unit tests per utility. Split into a core 'utilcode' module and a rarely-needed 'subutil' module so you aren't forced to pull in everything. 33k stars and 10k forks means most of the edge cases across OEM skins and API levels have already been hit and reported.
It's a static-method kitchen sink — classes like Utils.init(context) hold global state, which fights dependency injection and makes unit testing call sites harder. Pulling in one helper tends to pull in the whole module unless you're aggressive with R8/ProGuard, which hurts method count and APK size. The API surface and sample app are built around Activities/Fragments with API 14+ assumptions — no Kotlin-first API, no coroutines or Flow, nothing Compose-aware. Last push was August 2024 with sparse activity before that, so for a library this wide (permissions and encryption especially) you're trusting an increasingly dormant codebase to stay correct as Android keeps changing those APIs.
