// the take
Kataster is a small, complete single-screen space shooter built with Bevy 0.17 and Rust, meant as a reference project showing how real pieces (game states, menus, HUD, physics, particles) fit together rather than a toy you'd actually play. It's aimed at people already learning Bevy who want a working example bigger than the official snippets but smaller than a full game.
It's kept current with Bevy point releases, which most example projects aren't — that alone makes it unusually reliable as a learning reference. It wires together several commonly-used but separately-documented plugins (avian2d for physics, leafwing-input-manager for input, bevy_hanabi for particles), showing how they actually interoperate instead of in isolation. The scope is small enough to read end to end in one sitting, with state transitions, pause/resume, and a shader background as realistic but digestible patterns.
It's a demo, not a library or template with an API — there's nothing to depend on, only code to read and copy, so the value disappears if you're not actively learning Bevy right now. Tracking Bevy's breaking-change cadence means any fork or copy-paste you make will likely need rework within a couple of Bevy releases. There's a stray TODO file in the repo root rather than tracked issues, suggesting whatever's left unfinished isn't visible or prioritized anywhere a user could check.
