// the take

Journalit is an Obsidian plugin for discretionary and prop-firm traders to log trades, track broker-synced performance, and manage funded-account challenges. It targets futures/forex/prop-firm traders juggling multiple broker statements who want their journal to live in Obsidian rather than a web dashboard.

Broker coverage is unusually wide for this niche — IBKR, Rithmic, Tradovate, MT4/5, TopStepX, Sierra Chart, and more are all first-class import targets, which matters because prop-firm traders often run several platforms at once. The prop-challenge tracking (drawdown, daily loss limits, profit targets, payout rules, firm profiles) models the actual mechanics of funded accounts instead of bolting a generic P&L tracker onto them. The review system and dashboard are genuinely deep — layout builder, draggable widgets, heatmaps — not a thin wrapper around a table.

It's not open source despite living on GitHub with the full OSS trappings (issue templates, PR gate, topics) — it's source-available proprietary software, so forking or modifying it for your own use isn't actually permitted. 'Local-first' is true only for the core journal; Trade Sync, committing imports, the economic calendar, and prefilled prop-firm profiles all require an account and a Pro subscription, so the automation people actually want is SaaS-gated. Trade import analysis sends your file to Journalit's servers even on the free tier (diagnostic captures retained 1-14 days, previews 7 days), which is a real consideration for a tool marketed around keeping your trading data local. The whole sync/import pipeline depends on journalit.co staying up and priced the same — if that backend changes or disappears, the plugin's most useful features go with it.
