// the take
An Android SDK for remotely configuring and updating firmware on Estimote BLE beacons at scale — think bulk pushing new transmit power, iBeacon UUIDs, or firmware versions to a fleet of physical beacons via a companion app and Estimote Cloud. It's for teams running physical Estimote beacon deployments (retail, venues) who need to manage them without touching each one by hand.
The BulkUpdater pattern (configure in Estimote Cloud, let any user's phone passively propagate 'pending settings' to beacons in range) is a genuinely clever solve for not needing dedicated staff to visit every beacon. Cleanly splits detection (deprecated here, pushed to the separate Proximity SDK) from management, so you're not stuck with a bloated do-everything library. The connection/settings API surface (DOC_deviceConnection.md) covers both basic reads and advanced firmware operations, not just a toy subset.
Distributed via JCenter, which Google/JFrog shut down in 2021 — the documented installation method in the README is dead, so you can't even pull this dependency as written without hunting down a mirror or self-hosting the jars. No commits since August 2019, and it's tightly coupled to Estimote Cloud's paid fleet management subscription (free trial caps at 20 devices), so you're betting on a vendor's backend staying up for a client library that itself looks unmaintained. BLE on Android is fragile across OEMs and permission changes (this predates Android's granular Bluetooth permissions introduced in API 31), so expect real work getting scanning/connection reliable on modern devices with zero upstream support. Entirely proprietary-hardware-locked — there's no value here outside the Estimote ecosystem.
