CS106L : Standard C++ Programming Course

This is the lecture and assignment repo for Stanford's CS106L, a course on modern C++ (C++11 through C++20) for programmers who already know the basics and want a deeper grasp of the language. The topics run from uniform initialization and references through iterators, lambdas, move semantics, and RAII. The two assignments, WikiRacer and a HashMap template, are where the material gets practiced.

The topic order builds on itself: value semantics, references, and iterators come before move semantics and RAII, so the later material has the groundwork it needs. The HashMap assignment has you write a template container and measure it against std::unordered_map, which forces a concrete answer to why the standard library makes the choices it does. The assignment folders include test harnesses (tests.cpp, test_harness.cpp, test_utility.cpp) plus sample inputs and expected outputs, so you can check your work without a grader.

The lecture content lives in PDF slides, not as text or code in the repo, so you cannot grep it, diff it, or run its examples from here. The README gives topic headings with no explanation. Build setup is inconsistent: Qt Creator .pro and .pro.user files are committed (the .pro.user files hold per-machine state), a Makefile appears in only some folders, and there are no top-level build or test instructions. The last push was June 2025, and the assignment links point at a 2012 course archive (cs106l.1212), so some references are likely stale. Treat this as a snapshot of one course offering, not a maintained project.
