A 2D Terrain Tool for Godot
SmartShape2D is a Godot 4 plugin for building 2D terrain and platform outlines. You place points, assign a shape material, and the textures repeat along the edges and fill the interior, the way TileMap terrain does. It is for 2D game developers who want art-directed ground and platform edges without placing sprites by hand along every segment.
The shape-material split is the right abstraction. Edge textures, corner pieces, and fill live in one resource that every shape can reuse, so an artist can restyle a whole level by editing one material. Each editor operation has its own action class (add point, cut edge, split shape, move vertices, invert orientation), which suggests undo and redo were designed in rather than added later. Collision generation is a separate module, and GUT unit tests are wired into GitHub Actions.
The README says the documentation is largely outdated, and in-engine help won't show SS2D nodes or property tooltips until you re-save the script, a Godot editor bug the author is waiting on for 4.5. The video tutorials are for Godot 3, so a newcomer has to reconcile two different workflows. The whole plugin is GDScript with no native component, and the repo has no benchmarks showing where that becomes a problem, so large shapes with many points are a likely place to hit slowdowns in the editor.
