// the take
A Java client library for OpenAI's API, split into api (POJOs), client (Retrofit wrapper), and service (convenience layer) modules, covering completions, chat, embeddings, assistants, and function calling. Aimed at Java/JVM developers who want to call OpenAI without hand-rolling an HTTP client and JSON mapping.
Clean three-tier split lets you pick just the request/response POJOs, the raw Retrofit client, or the batteries-included OpenAiService depending on how much control you want. Built on Retrofit/OkHttp with Jackson already configured for OpenAI's snake_case fields, so it drops into a typical Java/Spring stack with no glue code. Covers streaming (SSE) and function calling with a FunctionExecutor helper that handles argument deserialization and dispatch for you.
Archived since June 2024 with no updates since — nothing here supports anything OpenAI has shipped after that (Responses API, newer structured outputs, current tool-calling formats, newer model families). Much of the surface area (Engines, legacy fine-tunes, Edits) is for endpoints OpenAI itself has deprecated, so a chunk of this library is dead weight. OpenAiService has no retry logic or async support by design — the author's own FAQ tells you to bypass it and call OpenAiApi directly if you need either. Being unmaintained means any future CVE in the Retrofit/OkHttp/Jackson dependency chain just sits there; you're on your own to fork and patch.
