// the take

An action-adventure game demo built in Unity, created as a collaboration between Unity's Creator Advocacy team and the open-source community to showcase production patterns (addressables, localization, scene composition, audio) in a real Unity project. Useful for Unity developers who want a non-trivial, real-world codebase to study rather than a toy sample scene.

The scene/state-machine architecture, event system, and audio cue setup (DOTween, addressables-driven asset loading, pooled sound emitters) are documented and reflect patterns used in shipped Unity games, not textbook examples. Addressables are used properly for scenes, localization tables, and data objects rather than bolted on as an afterthought. The wiki-style docs explain the 'why' behind architectural choices (factory pattern, runtime anchors, scene chunks), which is rarer in game repos than code comments.

Development stopped in December 2021 and the README says so explicitly — this is a frozen snapshot, not a maintained project, so there will be no fixes for engine API drift. It's pinned to Unity 2020.3 LTS, now multiple major versions behind; opening it in a current Editor will likely trigger upgrade prompts and possible breakage in addressables/TextMeshPro configuration. It ships third-party asset binaries (DOTween.dll, TextMeshPro resources) directly in the repo rather than via package manager references, which bloats the checkout and means you can't easily bump those dependencies. As a game rather than a library, there's no API surface to adopt — the value is purely as a reference to read, not something you integrate.

We read the README, the directory tree and a key source file in October 2026. Nobody pays to be listed. How we judge →
