Jetpack Media3 support libraries for media use cases, including ExoPlayer, an extensible media player for Android

AndroidX Media is the source tree for Jetpack Media3: ExoPlayer for local and streaming playback, Transformer for on-device video editing and transcoding, and the media session libraries that expose playback to system controls and other apps. It is for Android developers who have outgrown MediaPlayer or need editing in the same app.

Playback, editing and sessions ship from one repo, and the README requires every module to be the same version, so you avoid mixing an ExoPlayer build with a Transformer build from a different release. The API stability policy is stated plainly: the commonly used surface carries compatibility guarantees, and experimental pieces are marked @UnstableApi so lint flags them, which is the right contract for a library this size. The demos each cover a distinct integration path (main, session, cast, compose, gl, effect, composition), so there is a working reference for a specific use case, not only prose docs. Transformer and the GL-based effect demos put editing and frame-level processing in the same library as playback, which is unusual for a playback library.

The README is mostly links. Behavior and usage detail live on developer.android.com and the developer blog, so the repo alone tells you little about how a module is meant to be used. Stability is partial by design: advanced APIs need an OptIn for UnstableApi and can change between releases, so a non-trivial app will reach into unstable surface eventually and inherit that churn. Building from source is fiddly. It needs a bespoke includeMedia3 composite-build setup, the MIDI module requires JitPack and a manual toggle in modules.kt, and some modules depend on external libraries you build by hand. The setup snippet still pins targetCompatibility to Java 1.8, so anyone copying it into a new project gets an old bytecode target unless they check the release notes.
