Terraform / OpenTofu Provider for Proxmox VE
A Terraform/OpenTofu provider for Proxmox VE, forked from the abandoned danitso/terraform-provider-proxmox and now the de facto standard for managing Proxmox with IaC. It covers VMs, containers, storage, SDN, HA, firewall rules, and cluster config — for anyone running Proxmox and wanting it under Terraform state instead of clicking through the web UI.
Coverage is genuinely wide — SDN zones/fabrics, HA groups, hardware mappings, ACME, cluster firewall, backup jobs are all modeled, not just the usual VM/container basics. The project has ADRs (docs/adr) explaining real design decisions like API client structure and schema conventions, which is rare rigor for a provider this size. The Known Issues section in the README is unusually candid — it lists actual production gotchas (HA-managed VM drift, serial device requirements for Debian/Ubuntu cloud images, PAM-account requirements for snippet uploads) instead of burying them in issues. Actively tracking current Proxmox VE releases (9.2) with a stated compatibility policy.
Still built primarily on the legacy Terraform SDKv2 — migration to the Plugin Framework is underway but incomplete, so the codebase currently straddles two different resource patterns. Version is pre-1.0 and explicitly says minor versions aren't guaranteed backward-compatible, which is a real risk if you pin loosely in a Terraform module. Several operations (snippet/backup upload via SFTP, cluster hardware mappings) require a PAM Linux account rather than working through API tokens, which breaks token-only automation setups. It's a single-maintainer, sponsorship-funded fork of an abandoned project — solid track record so far, but a bus-factor risk for something this central to infrastructure.
