A crowdsourced, mad-lib, choose your own adventure story!

A small Next.js app that stitches together XState, Hasura, and Netlify Forms/Functions to run a crowdsourced choose-your-own-adventure story. It's a demo project from Cassidy Williams showing how those pieces fit together, not a framework or library meant to be depended on.

Good reference implementation of XState driving UI flow in a real (if small) Next.js app — the context/stateMachine.js file is a clean example of state-machine-as-navigation rather than the usual todo-list toy demo. The Netlify Forms + Functions setup (functions/submission-created.js, functions/get-character.js) is a decent pattern for a zero-backend serverless CRUD flow without hand-rolling an API. One-click Netlify deploy button actually matches the netlify.toml config, so the 'try it in 30 seconds' claim is real.

Dead since June 2021 — Next.js, Hasura, and Netlify Forms have all moved on significantly since, so a fresh clone is likely to hit dependency and API breakage rather than working out of the box. Zero tests anywhere in the tree, which is fine for a weekend project but means nothing catches regressions if you fork it. Hard-coupled to three external services (Hasura, Netlify Forms, Netlify Functions) to do anything beyond the README's vague 'fallbacks,' so there's real setup cost before you see it work with your own data. It's a portfolio/demo piece at ~15 source files, not something to build on architecturally.
