A free online book by Chip Huyen covering the ML job interview process end-to-end: roles, interview formats, compensation negotiation, and 200+ technical questions spanning math, CS fundamentals, and ML algorithms. Written by someone who has been on both sides of the table at NVIDIA, Google, and Snorkel AI. Aimed at candidates preparing for ML engineer and research scientist roles.
The dual perspective — interviewer and candidate — gives it credibility that generic prep guides lack. The compensation and negotiation chapters are unusually concrete for a free resource; most prep books skip this entirely. The 200+ questions are tagged by difficulty level, which lets you calibrate preparation to seniority rather than grinding everything blindly. A Farsi translation is included in the repo, meaning it has seen real community investment beyond the original author.
The content is frozen around 2021 and the ML landscape has shifted hard — LLM-specific roles, prompt engineering, RLHF, and inference infrastructure barely existed then and aren't covered. The answers to the technical questions live in a separate community Discord rather than in the repo itself, which creates a dependency that could disappear. The repo is essentially a static GitBook export with no tooling for contributions, so errors and outdated content accumulate with no clear correction path. The systems design section punts entirely to a separate Stanford course rather than including the material.
