🔥 Thin Backend is a Blazing Fast, Universal Web App Backend for Making Realtime Single Page Apps

Thin Backend auto-generates a realtime CRUD API on top of a Postgres database, pairing a React/Vue client library with Postgres Row Level Security for authorization. It's aimed at small teams who want a Firebase-style backend but want to keep their data in plain Postgres instead of a proprietary store.

Authorization is actual Postgres Policies, not an app-layer permission system bolted on top, so the rules hold even if you query the DB directly. Optimistic updates are built into createRecord/updateRecord/deleteRecord rather than left as an exercise for the consumer. The schema designer round-trips to real DDL instead of hiding migrations behind an ORM abstraction, and TypeScript types are generated straight from the schema.

Last commit is from November 2022 — this is dead, not dormant, and the GitHub issues and 31 forks suggest it never had enough adopters to survive its creator's Haskell/IHP company. Core server runtime is built on IHP, a Haskell framework with a tiny hiring pool, which is an odd foundation to bet a JS-facing product on. Zero-setup login and the hosted schema designer push you toward thin.dev's managed service, so self-hosting is possible but clearly the secondary path. Test coverage looks thin — one querybuilder.test.js file in the whole repo.
