// the take

A workshopper-style CLI that teaches early ES6 features (arrow functions, destructuring, default args, template strings) through self-guided exercises, compiled with the Traceur transpiler. Built by Domenic Denicola in the 2013-2015 window when ES6 was still called 'Harmony' and browsers barely supported any of it.

Exercise format is well-structured: each topic has a problem description, a test harness, and a reference solution, which is the right shape for teaching-by-doing. Covers the trickier ES6 semantics (arrow function 'this' binding, default argument evaluation order) rather than just syntax tours. French translations exist for problem descriptions, showing some effort toward broader accessibility.

Last commit is from 2017 and it targets Node 0.10 - it will not install or run on any Node version released in the last decade without manual intervention. It depends on Traceur, a transpiler that lost the ES6 compiler wars to Babel and has been unmaintained for years, so the exercises may not even reflect how these features actually behave in modern engines. Coverage is explicitly 'pretty minor' per the README - no classes, modules, generators, or Proxies/Reflect, which were the harder ES6 concepts worth teaching. Anyone wanting to learn these features today is far better served by running native Node and just reading MDN or the spec directly.

We read the README, the directory tree and a key source file in October 2026. Nobody pays to be listed. How we judge →
