// the take

This is the official Elm language guide, written by Elm's creator Evan Czaplicki, covering everything from installation through The Elm Architecture, JSON decoding, ports/interop, and performance optimization (lazy, keyed nodes). It's for developers learning Elm from scratch or looking for the canonical explanation of a specific feature.

It's written by the language's own designer, so the explanations of why Elm works the way it does (no runtime exceptions, the update/view/model split) come from the source rather than a third-party interpretation. It goes past syntax into real operational concerns: asset size, virtual DOM diffing costs, and JS interop limits. It ships a working embedded REPL (repl/) with its own build, not just prose. Content is organized as a proper book with a SUMMARY.md table of contents rather than a loose pile of blog posts.

The author explicitly refuses structural contributions and only accepts typo-level PRs, so if a section goes stale or a concept ages badly, the community can't fix it — only Evan can, and he updates "like a paper book," i.e., infrequently. There's no versioning against specific Elm compiler releases, so as the language or package ecosystem shifts, there's no way to tell which parts of the guide still match current behavior. It's static markdown rendered through a custom build.sh with no search and no interactivity beyond the REPL, which is thin compared to modern docs tooling. Elm itself has a small, slow-moving ecosystem, so skills from this guide have limited transfer outside Elm-specific jobs.
