A step-by-step Netty 4.x tutorial series written as ~40 standalone Maven modules, walking from raw BIO/NIO/AIO through basic Netty servers up to SSL, heartbeat/reconnect, protobuf, flow control, and a bolted-on hand-rolled RPC framework. It's aimed at Java developers who want to learn Netty concept-by-concept rather than read one production codebase.
Each lesson is its own self-contained module with its own pom.xml, so you can open module N and diff it against N-1 to see exactly what one concept (encoder, heartbeat, SSL, etc.) adds, without wading through accumulated code. The progression itself is genuinely well-ordered: BIO/NIO/AIO first so Netty's abstractions make sense, then codecs, then protocol/transport concerns, then a real applied example (RPC framework, IoT gateway) instead of stopping at toy echo servers.
All the actual explanation lives in WeChat public-account articles linked from the README, not in the repo — no English docs, no inline write-ups, and WeChat articles are a bad long-term source since they can be throttled or require the WeChat app/login to read, so half the educational value is one platform outage away from disappearing. There's no root aggregator pom, so you can't build the whole thing at once; each of the 40-odd modules has to be opened and run individually. Each module's tests are a single trivial ApiTest, not real coverage, and the repo hasn't been touched since September 2024 while still being flagged as 'continuously updated.'
