// the take

Omamail is a native email and calendar client (Rust backend, Qt/QML frontend) that runs either as an Omarchy shell plugin on Hyprland or as a standalone desktop app on macOS/Linux/Windows, with support for Gmail, Outlook/M365, HEY, JMAP and IMAP/SMTP. It's aimed at keyboard-driven Linux desktop users, particularly the Omarchy crowd, who want one mail client across multiple accounts instead of juggling webmail tabs.

Protocol coverage is genuinely broad — Gmail OAuth, M365/Outlook, HEY, JMAP and plain IMAP/SMTP (Fastmail, iCloud, self-hosted) in one client rather than one vendor's API. Credentials go through the system keyring and remote images are blocked by default, which is the right default for a mail client. Keyboard navigation (j/k, r, c, /) is a first-class feature, not an afterthought. AI assistance is routed through whatever CLI agent you already run (Claude, Codex, OpenCode) instead of the app shipping its own API keys and prompt plumbing.

macOS and Windows builds are unsigned; the installer only strips quarantine after a checksum check, so you're trusting a shell/PowerShell script rather than Gatekeeper or Authenticode, and users will hit SmartScreen/Gatekeeper friction. Feature parity is uneven across targets: AI assistance, the bar widget and mailto integration only exist in the Omarchy plugin build, the standalone app drops AI and tray/mailto entirely, and Windows AI support is simply deferred — so 'AI mail client' is really a Linux-plugin-only claim. The Rust-backend-over-RPC-to-QML architecture is a less-trodden stack for a mail client, meaning a smaller pool of contributors who can debug the IPC boundary versus something built on Electron or a single-language native stack. Nothing in the README addresses sync behavior at scale — push vs. poll for IMAP, large-mailbox indexing time, or offline search limits — which is exactly where mail clients tend to fall over in daily use.
