// the take

A native macOS client for watching WWDC session videos, complete with transcripts, bookmarks, and iCloud-synced progress across machines. Built for iOS/macOS developers who want a better viewing experience than Apple's own web player or Developer app, especially during the week of the conference.

Searchable, multi-language transcripts with click-to-seek are a genuinely useful feature Apple's own clients don't offer. The codebase is split into reusable packages (ConfCore for data/sync, PlayerUI for the player chrome) rather than one monolithic app target, which keeps the player logic testable and portable. Clip sharing and bookmark annotations are well-scoped, specific features rather than bolted-on bloat. The project has shipped yearly for a decade, so it has survived multiple WWDC API format changes already.

It depends entirely on Apple's undocumented WWDC content API, so a format change on Apple's side can break ingestion with no warning and no SLA to fix it. CloudKit sync is disabled for anyone who builds from source themselves, since that requires signing with the maintainer's own entitlements — self-built copies lose cross-device sync entirely. Storage is Realm via a custom fork that patches a `target` to a `binaryTarget`, which is a real maintenance liability if upstream Realm changes break compatibility with that patch. Distribution runs through Sparkle outside the Mac App Store, so users have to trust an unsigned-by-Apple update channel rather than sandboxed App Store delivery.
