🎒 Backpack is a minimalistic build system for Node.js projects.

Backpack is a zero-config build wrapper around Webpack 4 and Babel for plain Node.js backends — file watching, live reload, and transpiling async/await and class properties without you touching a webpack config. It's aimed at people who want create-react-app's convenience but for a Node server instead of a React frontend.

Genuinely zero-config to start: one dependency, one convention (src/index.js), and npm run dev gives you watch-and-reload with readable error output. The escape hatches are sane — a backpack.config.js lets you reach into the real webpack config function-style instead of hiding it behind an opaque abstraction, and babel config falls back to your own .babelrc if present. Scope is honestly narrow: it explicitly tells React/SSR users to go use Razzle instead rather than trying to be everything.

Pinned to Webpack 4 with no sign of migration to 5 — that alone makes it a liability to add to a new project in 2026, since plugin and loader compatibility has moved on. Last push is mid-2024 but the README and examples (stage-0 babel preset, old lerna monorepo setup) read like 2017 and nothing suggests active maintenance versus a dead repo that happened to get a housekeeping commit. No TypeScript-first support (it's bolted on as one of several examples, not a first-class path), and there's no mention of Webpack 4's known slow rebuild times on larger projects, which is exactly the pain point a 'zero-config build tool' should be solving.
