// the take
Jest is Facebook/Meta's all-in-one JavaScript testing framework bundling a test runner, assertion library, mocking, and snapshot testing. It's the default choice for most React and Node.js projects, aimed at teams who want one tool instead of assembling Mocha+Chai+Sinon.
Zero-config setup for most CommonJS projects, built-in parallel test execution via worker processes, snapshot testing that's genuinely useful for UI regression checks, and a huge ecosystem of community plugins/transforms (babel-jest, ts-jest) built around it.
ESM support has been a long-standing pain point and still requires flags/workarounds in many setups. Performance lags behind newer runners like Vitest, especially startup time, since Jest spins up fresh module registries per file. TypeScript isn't type-checked out of the box (just transpiled via Babel), so you need ts-jest or a separate tsc pass to catch type errors. Configuration can get complicated once you leave the happy path (moduleNameMapper, transform ignore patterns, etc.), and migrating a large legacy codebase onto it often means fighting mock hoisting behavior.
