mochajs/mocha
☕️ Classic, reliable, trusted test framework for Node.js and the browser
Mocha is the original flexible Node.js/browser test runner — BDD/TDD/QUnit/exports style interfaces, pluggable reporters, no opinions about assertions or mocking. Good fit for teams who want to pick their own assertion library (chai, assert, etc.) and already have conventions around how tests should look, or who maintain legacy suites that predate Jest/Vitest.
Interface system (bdd/tdd/qunit/exports) and third-party UI support mean you're not locked into one syntax, which matters if you're migrating an old codebase incrementally. Root hook plugins and global fixtures solve the 'shared setup across files' problem cleanly without the magic Jest does. Parallel mode plus a dedicated worker pool (lib/nodejs/buffered-worker-pool.cjs) is a real, non-hand-wavy implementation, not just `--maxWorkers` sugar. Eleven built-in reporters (including GitHub Actions and TAP) cover CI integration without needing a plugin.
No bundled assertion library, spies, or mocks — every project reinvents the chai/sinon/proxyquire stack, so setup cost is real compared to Jest or Vitest out of the box. No code coverage; you're bolting on nyc/c8 yourself. The docs explicitly call out a 'maintenance reboot' blog post and the project describes itself as volunteer-run with open accepting-PR backlogs, so response time on issues can be slow. The `--compilers` flag (old TS/CoffeeScript support) is in the deprecation path per docs/explainers/compilers-deprecation.mdx, which will break older configs still relying on it.
