// the take
Breadit is a full Reddit clone — subreddits, nested comments, voting, feeds — built on Next.js 13's App Router with Prisma, NextAuth, and Upstash Redis. It's the companion repo to a YouTube tutorial, so it's aimed at developers wanting a worked example of modern Next.js patterns rather than a production starter.
Uses App Router parallel and intercepting routes (@authModal, (.)sign-in) to do modal auth on top of a real route, which is a genuinely useful pattern to see implemented rather than just described. Voting and subscribe/unsubscribe use React Query optimistic updates, so the UI reacts instantly instead of waiting on a round trip. Upstash Redis is used for actual post caching, not just session storage. Server/client split is explicit where it matters (PostVoteServer vs PostVoteClient), and Zod validators are separated per domain (post, comment, subreddit, vote).
No tests anywhere in the tree — zero automated coverage on voting, auth, or comment logic. No CI config, so nothing catches breakage as Next.js, NextAuth, or Prisma move versions. Getting it running requires provisioning Postgres, a Google OAuth app, Upstash Redis, and UploadThing before you see a single page — a lot of external accounts for a clone project. It's explicitly tutorial code (acknowledgements credit thumbnail design, ships a separate starter-code branch), so expect instructional clarity over production concerns like error handling, rate limiting, or input sanitization.
