NoFWL Desktop Application

// the take

NoFWL is a Tauri-based desktop wrapper around the OpenAI chat API, giving Windows/Mac/Linux users a native-feeling app instead of the browser tab. It's aimed at people who want a lightweight ChatGPT client and are willing to bring their own API key.

Tauri keeps the binary small and the Rust shell thin (the whole native layer is one main.rs), so it's cheap on memory compared to Electron alternatives. It ships with a real plugin mechanism (bing, chatgpt plugins with JS + meta.yml) rather than hardcoding one integration. i18n coverage is unusually wide for a project this size — 14 locale files including Arabic, Korean, Turkish.

Last push was January 2024 and the README's own TODO list (system tray, export, shortcuts, prompt sync, plugins) is still entirely unchecked, so 'currently under active development' is no longer true — this is an abandoned project. macOS requires manually clearing the quarantine attribute via Terminal because the app isn't signed/notarized, which will stop non-technical users cold. There's no CI, no tests, and no indication of how API keys are stored or whether requests go anywhere besides OpenAI directly, which matters for a desktop app handling a secret key. It's also the second of two near-identical projects from the same author (lencx/ChatGPT came first), so pick this one knowing the other may get fixes it doesn't.

We read the README, the directory tree and a key source file in October 2026. Nobody pays to be listed. How we judge →
