🦄 A curated list of privacy & security-focused software and services
A long-running awesome-list of privacy and security software, split into password managers, messaging, browsers, networking, and a dozen other categories. It's for developers and privacy-conscious users looking for open-source or privacy-respecting alternatives to the usual data-hungry defaults, with an entry point for both casual browsing and contributing.
The data layer is a structured YAML file (awesome-privacy.yml) rather than hand-written markdown, so the README table of contents, the Astro/Svelte website, and a Hono-based API are all generated from one source of truth. The API supports both Node and Cloudflare Workers entry points, has its own caching layer (memory + KV) and rate limiting, and ships an OpenAPI spec. CI is unusually strict for a list repo: separate workflows check YAML diffs, PR metadata, review-readiness, and even run zizmor against the GitHub Actions themselves.
Inclusion criteria are inconsistent — entries like Mojeek and 1Password are listed with a caveat that they're not actually open source, which undercuts the 'privacy-respecting open-source' framing for anyone skimming rather than reading each disclaimer. The pipeline that gates every PR (lib/checks/*.py) has no visible test coverage, unlike the api/ and web/ packages which do have vitest suites — so the part that decides what goes in the list is the least verified part of the repo. Accuracy depends entirely on contributor and maintainer vigilance (the README itself flags Qwant for tracking despite its own claims), which is a structural risk for any crowd-sourced list this size.
