A bare-bones Next.js starter for wiring up a single-page chat UI against OpenAI's completion API. It's the stripped-down sibling of the author's full Chatbot UI project, meant for people who want to see the whole request/response plumbing in one sitting rather than ship a real product.

The entire app is maybe a dozen files, so you can read the complete OpenAI chat flow (API route, streaming, UI state) in ten minutes. System and assistant prompts are isolated in utils/index.ts and pages/index.tsx, so you can swap behavior without touching the chat components. Tailwind and TypeScript are already configured, so there's zero setup tax before you start customizing.

Zero persistence — refresh the tab and the conversation is gone, no localStorage, no DB. Hardcoded to OpenAI with the API key read straight in the route handler, so adding another provider means rewriting pages/api/chat.ts from scratch. No tests and no visible error handling for failed requests or rate limits. Last pushed April 2023, so it predates the current OpenAI SDK, App Router conventions, and years of chat-UI UX lessons — fine as a teaching artifact, not a base for anything you'll maintain.
