// the take
QuickMapServices (QMS) is a QGIS plugin that lets you search a catalog of public basemaps and geospatial web services (XYZ/TMS, WMS, WFS, GeoJSON) and drop them into a map in one click instead of hand-configuring URLs. It's aimed at GIS users and analysts working in QGIS who just want a quick basemap without digging up service endpoints.
The catalog (qms.nextgis.com) is decoupled from the plugin itself and exposed as an open API, so other GIS tools can reuse the same service list instead of each one maintaining its own. Supporting four distinct service protocols (XYZ/TMS, WMS, WFS, GeoJSON) in one UI covers most of what people actually hit in the wild. Filtering by map extent and caching recently-used services are small but genuinely useful UX touches for a tool used dozens of times a day. It's maintained by NextGIS, an actual GIS company, not a solo hobby project, which shows in the plugin's longevity and integration with NextGIS Web.
The whole discovery feature depends on a single external service (qms.nextgis.com); if that's down or rate-limits you, search stops working with no offline catalog fallback mentioned. Catalog entries are community-contributed, and there's no described review or validation process for added service URLs, so you're trusting arbitrary third-party WMS/WFS/tile endpoints by default. As a QGIS plugin it rides on QGIS's plugin API and Qt bindings, so QGIS major version bumps are a recurring source of breakage that's outside this project's control. There's no test suite visible in the tree, which is a real risk for a plugin juggling several service-type parsers (TMS, WMS, WFS, MVT, GeoJSON) that are easy to silently regress.
