// the take

Manyverse is a mobile and desktop client for Scuttlebutt (SSB), a peer-to-peer, offline-first social protocol with no central server. It's aimed at people who want a Twitter/Mastodon-like feed but are fed up with platforms controlled by a company or a single server admin, and are willing to trade reach and discoverability for that.

Genuinely serverless architecture — your feed is a local append-only log (ssb-db2) that syncs directly with peers over LAN, Tor, or pubs, so the app works fully offline and isn't one AWS outage away from disappearing. One codebase targets Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux via React Native plus Electron, which is a real engineering feat for a project this size. Localization is unusually deep — strings are translated into 30+ languages through an active Crowdin project, not just machine-translated filler.

No commits since August 2024 — over two years stale as of now, which for a protocol-dependent social app raises real questions about whether it's still maintained or quietly abandoned. The patches directory shows forked, patched versions of core dependencies (sodium-chloride, ssb-db2, react-native-fs), meaning upgrading React Native or any of those libs requires redoing hand-maintained patches, not a clean bump. SSB's follow-based gossip model means discovery is weak by design — there's no search across the network, so new users depend entirely on pubs or existing friends to find anyone, which makes the onboarding experience rough compared to centralized alternatives.
