// the take
Survey Creator is a self-hosted, embeddable drag-and-drop builder for forms, surveys, and quizzes, with thin wrappers for React, Angular, Vue, and plain JS sitting on one TypeScript core. It outputs JSON form definitions that render through the separate SurveyJS Form Library, so it's aimed at teams building a forms-as-a-product feature (admin tooling, intake forms, assessment builders) rather than people who just need to collect responses.
Genuinely framework-agnostic — one core with real wrappers per framework, not a React-only tool with ports bolted on. JSON is the actual artifact, not an internal detail: definitions version, diff, and copy, and the same schema renders in the free Form Library and the paid PDF Generator/Dashboard products. The UI Preset Editor and custom question type API let you scope the builder down per tenant or role without forking the UI. Test coverage includes a Playwright accessibility suite (designer, logic, translation, themes), not just unit tests on the data model.
Despite sitting next to an MIT-licensed sibling (Form Library), Survey Creator itself needs a paid per-developer commercial license for any production use — free use is proof-of-concept only, so this isn't the drop-in free form builder the GitHub listing might suggest. There's no reference backend: persistence, auth, and response storage are entirely on you, so 'self-hosted' really means 'you build the other half.' The 462 forks against 1286 stars is a high ratio, worth checking what people are patching before you adopt it as-is. Scale and analytics past the editor — grading, response dashboards, high-volume rendering — live in separate paid SurveyJS products, so this repo only solves the building half of the problem.
