tjdevries/advent-of-nvim

★ 539 · Lua · updated Dec 2024

A day-by-day companion repo for a YouTube series where TJ DeVries builds a Neovim config from scratch, one topic per lesson (LSP, treesitter, telescope, completion, oil.nvim). It's for someone who wants to understand *why* a modern Neovim config looks the way it does, not just copy-paste one.

Each lesson lives in its own numbered folder with its own init.lua, so you can diff day 5 against day 4 and see exactly what one concept added instead of reverse-engineering a 2000-line dotfiles repo. The final nvim/ config is a genuinely complete modern stack (treesitter, native LSP, telescope with multi-ripgrep, blink/nvim-cmp-style completion, oil.nvim) rather than a toy. Coming from TJ DeVries specifically carries weight here — he wrote Telescope and sits on Neovim core, so the LSP and treesitter sections aren't secondhand knowledge.

The README's own checklist shows it's roughly half-finished — LSP install/management, snippets, mini.* text objects, and clipboard config are all unchecked, and the last push was December 2024 with no activity since, so treat it as abandoned rather than actively maintained. The markdown lesson notes are thin on their own; several just say 'longer video: <link>', meaning the actual explanation lives on YouTube and the repo alone won't teach you much. Folder naming is inconsistent (numbered lessons vs. an 'XX - oil' folder bolted on later), a sign this is a working companion repo, not something polished for reuse — don't expect to `cp -r nvim ~/.config/nvim` and have a stable experience, since the README itself declines to guarantee that.
